This peer tutoring web site is meant to be used as a supplement to your class. By no means are the grades from the assignments on this site to be the only grades that the peer tutor receives. Before using the site with the peer tutors, the special education teacher needs to go through the site and become familiar with all of the contents. After the teacher becomes familiar with what the site has to offer, the peer tutor accounts need to be set up and the teacher needs to decide how she/he will incorporate the site assignments into the overall grade for the class. There is an explanation on how to set up the accounts in the teacher assessment entrance. There will be a separate account set up for each peer tutor.

When the teacher conducts the peer tutor training, normally the first week of school, the teacher will be going over the class syllabus and discussing the grades. If the teacher decides to use the site, then the teacher should take time to go over, with the peer tutors, how to use the site and how it will be incorporated into the peer tutoring class. Depending on the way that a school’s schedule is set up, it is recommended that a student in Peer Tutoring I complete units 1 – 5 and the unit on careers. This works perfect for a school schedule set on blocks where the classes switch at the end of a term. If the class continues the entire length of the school year, then it is recommended that all of the units be completed. Each unit has a main title. Within each unit are several sub-units. After reading and exploring web connections for each sub-unit, the peer tutors will be instructed to print out a set of comprehension questions. Upon completion of these questions, the peer tutor will then turn the questions into the teacher. How these questions are used in the grades is up to the individual teacher. After the peer tutor completes all of the sub-unit questions and has turned them into the teacher, the peer tutor and the teacher will coordinate a time for that student to take the unit quiz.

Due to the fact that the teacher will have the passwords needed to log into the student accounts, the quizzes will have to be taken in the presence of the teacher. It is recommended that the passwords be kept in a secure location and not be disclosed to students. Each unit quiz has a database of 20 questions from which the computer will randomly select 15 to present on the quiz. The questions will be constructed of multiple choice and true/false. At the end of the quiz, the student will be given immediate feed back on the results. The student will be shown the questions answered correctly and incorrectly. With the questions answered incorrectly, the correct response along with an explanation will be given. These results will be set up to be emailed to the teacher. Each teacher will then be responsible to determine how the grades will be used. According to the score of the quiz, the students will be given a comment.

Each teacher will make a decision reagrding an acceptable quiz score. Students scoring below this grade will need to retake the quiz. The site has been set up to allow the peer tutors to take the quiz (# of times). Each grade will be emailed to the teacher automatically. Please note that the grades are not tracked or averaged. It is recommended for record keeping purposes that the emails sent to the teacher be printed out to keep as a hard copy. Do not wait until the end of the class and depend on the site to have a grade average. The site will only provide quiz grades.

When the teacher develops the syllabus for the peer tutoring class, a culminating activity or final should be given. The site provides suggestions from which peer tutors can choose to complete for a culminating activity. These ideas are found in the student section of the site. The teacher can predetermine what assignment will be completed, or can add to the choices of assignments. It is not possible for this site to determine grades for the culminating activities. The peer tutor will have to turn this assignment in to the teacher for a grade.

This web site has been created as a flexible tool for the special education teacher to better enable teachers across the state to create, implement, improve, and maintain effective peer tutoring programs within their schools. Each teacher will choose which materials to use in her or his class and make decisions regarding how students will use the chosen materials.

Teachers and administrators can use this site to:
*develop new programs
*refine current programs
*give assignments, develop new assignments, and obtain grades
*get new ideas to use
*find links for related information

Peer tutors can use this site to:
*learn more about disabilities and related issues
*become familiar with using the internet
*find links to resources
*gain career info
*assist in development of portfolio pieces

The future hopes for this site are to have a bulletin board for peer tutors and for teachers to exchange ideas and to answer questions. Due to the construction of this site being financed via a grant, there will not be a webmaster to monitor the site on a continuous basis.
