The Benefits of Using an Advisory
Board
Several school systems have put together and are using a Peer Tutoring
Advisory Board. The purpose of the advisory board is to make sure that
the peer tutoring program is running as effectively and efficiently as
possible. The peer tutoring advisory board can make decisions on developing
a new peer tutoring program as well as any modifications that need to
be made to an existing program.
The members of the advisory board may differ from school to school, but
most programs that are using the advisory board consist of; special education
teacher, parent of a student with disabilities, guidance counselor, regular
education teacher, administrator, student with a disability, and two peer
tutors.
If a new peer tutoring program is being developed, the advisory board
will meet several times to discuss and make decisions on all issues related
to setting up a program. If a current program is already running, the
advisory board should meet once per term, unless more time is needed.
At these regular meetings, any topics relating to the program can and
should be discussed. Topics may include; recruiting high school students
to be special education majors, assignments, behavior, inclusion, training,
etc. It is important to remember that the advisory board is there to help
the program, not to take over the program, tear it to bits, or to be a
burden. |
