Role of the ParaEducator:

The role of the para-educator can change according to the special education student’s needs, the peer tutor’s abilities, and the needs and expectations of the special education teacher and the regular education teacher. The para-educator is to follow the overall guidance of the special education teacher. The para-educator may also need to collaborate with the regular education teacher and the peer tutor as to how to adapt assignments for the student with a disability, work with the peer tutor on how to handle situations that might arise with the student with a disability, work with the peer tutor and student with a disability to make sure that assignments are getting completed and turned in, help train peer tutors, supervise peer tutors, meet with the special education and regular education teachers on a regular basis, assist peer tutors on their assignments, and administer discipline as directed by the special education teacher, the regular education teacher, and the administration.
