Additional Special Education Teacher Information

Role of the Special Education Teacher:

The role of the special education teacher is crucial in this program. The special education teacher is to set up the program, organize the assignments, select the peer tutors, train peer tutors, arrange class schedules for students with disabilities to be in inclusive classes, collaborate with the regular education teachers as to expectations of peer tutor and the special education student, coordinate the schedules of both the special education and regular education students, supervise all interactions, meet with the peer tutors on a regular basis, complete observations of the peer tutors in a variety of settings, collect and grade assignments, determine grades, and fine tune peer tutoring program as problems arise.

Especially when students with disabilities are included in regular education classes with the support of peer tutors, meetings between special and regular education teachers are very important and should occur several times a week. Such meetings do not need to be long. The special education teacher needs to pay close attention to any problems that are occurring in the regular education classroom.

The special education teacher is, of course, not primarily responsible for discipline within the regular education classroom, unless it pertains to peer tutor behavior that reflects on the peer tutoring program or assistance to the regular education teacher with appropriate discipline procedures for the student with a disability. The special education teacher is also to direct the role of the para-educator with the peer tutors.
