Why
should I become a Peer Tutor?
There are many reasons to become a peer tutor. If you are a people person, you will enjoy peer tutoring. While being a peer tutor, you will get to help, interact, and learn with so many different people. If you are thinking about becoming a teacher or entering any educational related field, peer tutoring can be very right for you! The law now states that all students, with and without disabilities, have the right to access all aspects of public education. Therefore, no matter what area of teaching you are thinking about going into, you will be working with people with disabilities. This will be great experience for your future! If you are thinking of going into a medical field, peer tutoring can be very valuable as well. In classrooms of students with multiple and severe disabilities, students often have medical issues that affect their education. Often, these health-related issues are addressed in the classroom. This might be a class to get some experience for your future! Also, if you are going into medicine or a related field, you can be sure that you will have patients who have disabilities, and you will want to be able to positively interact to provide them the best possible health care that you can give. If you are thinking of going into any field where you will be working with people with disabilities, this could be the class for you! If you have thought about this, then you need to be a peer tutor. (Be sure to see the section in this course that deals with careers.) If you are unsure what you want to do with your future, then still take peer tutoring! While in peer tutoring, you may just get a little push as to what you want to do with your life. Or, you may rule out a few fields for your future, and that can be important too! If you have had any experience working with people with disabilities, you will understand that they, like all of us, need people who will be there for them. When you are a peer tutor, you are there to help them fit into the high school setting more naturally. If you have a family member or friend who has a disability, then you already have the experience in your life to be a good peer tutor. If you feel that everyone deserves the right to an equal education, then you need to be a peer tutor. If you feel strongly about diversity in your school, then you need to realize that diversity is not just a race or gender issue, but also an issue for students with disabilities. Help make sure that your school considers all areas of student differences, including disabilities, when addressing diversity. If you want to have fun, then sign up for peer tutoring. When you are
a peer tutor, you will never be bored!
