Instructional Units:

Welcome to the instructional units of the peer tutoring web site.

If you are just browsing feel free to click at any of our links and explore the material we have provided.

If you are a high school peer tutoring taking this course for credit, you will find the content of your course on the links listed at left.

This course is set up as a series of instructional units. Eventually, there will be ten units; five units are currently available. In addition to the ten units, we recommended that teachers use the discussion of Careers Special Education and Human Services as an additional instructional unit.

Most of the units are set up in exactly the same way. You will find that there is an introductory page, followed by four linked pages that expand on the basic topic. On each of the pages, you will find material for you to review and activities to do. As you complete each of the activities, turn them in to your teacher. At the conclusion of each unit, your teacher will set you up with the unit quiz. Each of these quizzes will ask you a series of 15 multiple-choice questions.

The one unit that is set up somewhat differently is the unit on Types of Disability. This unit is set up with an introductory section and nine linked pages. It is intended to be taken twice. The first time through you would do the activities on the introductory page and select four of the topics. The second time you complete this unit, you would do the remaining five topics. There is a brief quiz for the introductory page and each of the individual sections, rather than a comprehensive 15 item quiz.

This web site is designed to assist your teacher in managing a peer tutoring program. Therefore, there is a great deal of flexibility in the way the materials on this site can be used. Check with your teacher to see exactly what the requirements are for you.

Some teachers will require that you take units in a pre-determined order. Other teachers will allow a great deal of flexibility. They will leave the choice of the units that you take and the order in which you do them up to you. Each teacher will determine the number of units that are required for each marking period, each semester, and for an entire academic year. This site is also intended to support multi-year peer tutoring experiences. Please check with your teacher to see how that can be arranged for you.

Keep in mind that this Peer Tutoring course has two purposes. First, peer tutoring is an opportunity for you to get to know some of your peers with disabilities and assist them in their educational experience. Second, it is a course that will teach you about people with disabilities and the services and supports needed to help them be successful in life.

It must be a positive educational and personal experience for you and your peers with disabilities. So, please enjoy both parts of the peer tutoring experience!
